ABBA *not* to replace Michael Jackson

1977abbajackson The Sun in the UK claims that negotations are on the way to make ABBA reunite to do the planned Michael Jackson Concerts.

From the Sun.co.uk:

POP legends ABBA are being primed to see if they will take on the record-breaking run of shows planned for Michael Jackson.

AEG Live, the team behind the King of Pop's planned 50-night residency are trying to tempt the Mamma Mia band out of retirement with mega-bucks deals.

Jacko was due to kick off his This Is It string of shows at the London 02 on July 13.

AEG Live now face a multi-million pound black hole if they cannot fill the slots.

The firm's chief David Campbell said: "There's a little foursome out in Sweden we keep talking to."

ABBA stormed onto the world stage in 1973, winning the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo.

Benny Andersson, 62, Bjorn Ulvaeus, 64, Agnetha Faltskog, 59 and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 63, pumped out hits including Super Trouper, Fernando and Dancing Queen.

But personal tensions saw them split in 1983.

A source said of the ABBA offer: "There are millions on the table.

"But there are many hurdles to overcome."

ABBA's spokes woman Görel Hanser denies it completely.

Plans for £18m Abba museum scrapped due to lack of money, money, money

From the Daily Mail UK:

Abba-the-museum But the founders  discovered fellow Swedes were raised to heights of frenzied apathy

over the idea – despite a recent resurgence in Abba-mania due to the musical and movie ‘Mamma Mia.’

Band members, who famously sang about cash in number one hit Money, Money, Money, agreed to co-operate because of the inter-active nature of the planned museum.

Previously they had refused to have anything to do with exhibitions about them.

The band found that few investors were willing to part with money to build a shrine to the Eurovision stars.

The grand proposals included stages for visitors to dance with hologram versions of Anni-Frid, Benny, Bjorn and Agnetha, karaoke booths, mock ups of the Abba dressing rooms and a whole host of memorabilia including photos, outfits and handwritten song compositions.

The project was launched in 2006 and the founders began collecting stage costumes, platform shoes, gold records, childhood scrapbooks and first musical instruments.

Miss Wigenheim-Westman said. 'It was Abba’s cultural treasure.'

The collection was mothballed as plans were put in motion to spend £18 million pounds on renovating Stockholm’s former Customs House into the museum.

But costs spiralled out of control until the museum was going to cost around triple that amount.

The rights to Abba the museum have now been sold to another promoter who plans to take the idea on a travelling roadshow with no permanent base.

The Power of ABBA's music...:

1975mammamia A three-year-old girl defies the odds when she woke up from a five-day coma singing "Mamma Mia." Layla Towsey was on life support after being revived from a near-fatal heart attack, brought on by meningitis. Doctors had just finished removing her breathing tube when her mother, Katy Towsey, heard her humming tunes from the popular musical and film.
Now back at home and full of energy, Towsey sings "Mama Mia" tunes all around the home. "It was driving me insane before," said her mother. "Now it just reminds me of what happened. It makes me so happy."

ABBA - How they started, Expressen article 1974

1974howabbastarted Written by Peter Himmelstrand.

Agnetha
Six years ago the hit "Jag Var Så Kär" entered the third place on Svensktoppen. It was the 17 year old Agnetha Fältskog's first record. She had written the song herself.
During the days she was working in an office. In the evenings she sang with a dance orchestra. Her first song become number 1 on Kvällstoppen and she got the opportunity to make records in Germany.
"Jag Var Så Kär" wasn't a one off success for Agnetha Fältskog. She continued to write and perform her own songs.
Her career took off and she went on folkpark tours and made record after record, many of them ended up on Svensktoppen.
Her songs, most of the very sentimental, went through the listeners' hearts to the hit lists. For example "Om Tårar Vore Guld".
When she was 19 she met Björn Ulvaeus. They got married with hundreds of fans watching, they moved to their own house and had a child.
She also played Mary Magdalene in the Swedish version of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
But the most important thing was the thing with Björn Ulvaeus. Because together they made up half of ABBA.

Björn
First Björn Ulvaeus was a Hootenanny Singers, then he became Björn Ulvaeus, then Björn in Björn & Benny and finally one of the B's of ABBA.
It was eleven years ago when Hootenanny Singers started. Four guys from Västervik who entered a radio contest.
Hootenanny Singers was quickly signed to Stikkan Anderson's record company and made hit after hit.
It didn't take long until Björn became the lead singer of the group, the girls' favourite and the one who had the most charming voice.
He started making solo recordings. He moved to Stockholm and went to university. And no, he didn't plan to make the music a full time career. But then he met Benny Andersson.

Benny
When Benny Anersson was 19 he had written three songs; "Wedding", "Sunny Girl" and "No Response". All three of them had been on the chart Tio I Topp. With Hep Stars, where Benny was the cute, longhaired pianist.
Benny, now 27, was a member of Hep Stars from the beginning until the end. During that time he evolved from a naturally talented musician to a professional.
He was the musical base of Hep Stars. He quickly surpassed the other members. With Hep Stars he started playing dance music, then pop concerts with fainting girls and screaming and then he went on to make Swedish dinner/entertainment shows.
At first he wrote songs in English, then he started to write Swedish songs  with Lasse Berghagen for a while.
But when he late one night in 1965 sat down in an empty office with Björn Ulvaeus and wrote a song he had found his right partner.
The couple started a successfull collaboration, with the support of Stikkan Anderson.
And then he met he singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad - and there was the seed of the other half of ABBA.

Anni-Frid

Anni-Frid Lyngstad, 28, is one of the many Hyland discoveries. She came to his show an evening in 1967 after winning a Barnens Dag competition. That time on TV she won many hearts by saying that her job was to be a wife with two children back home in Eskilstuna.
She had her own band, Anni-Frid Four, and they toured around Sörmland for six years.
Hylands's show and the folkpark circuit gave her the opportunity to go on tour with Lasse Lönndahl, make her first recording, participate in Melodifestivalen in 1969 and singing in restaurants with Charlie Norman.
She made several recordings that the reviewers loved but that the big audiences ignored. Her rumour as a fine singer grew. But this reputation was added with people saying that she wasn't 'broad' enough for a bigger audience.
Eventually she got her Svensktoppen hit "Min Egen Stad".
Who wrote that song? Benny Andersson, who at that time was her boyfriend and producer.

ABBA played for free - and the teachers reported them!

1974abbalärare  As I reported earlier ABBA rented the auditorium of a school for rehearsing for their upcoming 1974/1975 tour (see article here.)
Now I have found this article about teachers complaining about the loud sound from the auditorium:
"This noise is too much for anyone to stand! These are the words of two teachers at Rudbecksskolan i Sollentuna where ABBA played a few songs for the students of the school.
ABBA performed for free as a thank you for renting the auditorium. And the sound was loud. 114 db was measured according to the reporting teachers.
They have now made a complaint to the health administration board. No more than 90 db is allowed and even that shouldn't be allowed indoors according to the teachers. The same rules apply at the youth centers in Sollentuna. The health administration board so far has a very little chance to do anything about it.  The National Board of Health and Welfare are working out guidelines at the moment, says Hans Davidson, the health administrations board's chairman.
According to the rules from 1972 should noise in dance halls etc not exceed 90 db. Hans Davidsson sees this as a serious matter. This is nothing but serious. It's unreasonable that staff and the kids at our youth centers should be subjects to these high volumes.
      - There are experts that claim that discos where the sound levels have been measured from 90 db - 140 db are seriously risking losing their hearing at the age of 40.
P.S. ABBA the popgroup is from Vallentuna and the members are Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson.
